Awesome Advanced Placement (AP)
English Language and Composition Advanced Placement (AP) Language and Composition is an introductory college-level writing course. English Language and Composition supports students in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of disciplines and rhetorical contexts and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Both their writing and their reading assignments are designed to make students aware of the interactions among the writer’s purpose(s), the audience’s expectation(s), and the subject matter. In this course, students will compose in a variety of forms including: narrative, exploratory, expository, and argumentative. They will write on a variety of subjects from personal experiences to public policies, and from imaginative literature to popular culture. We will analyze writing styles that form the basis of academic and professional communications. Students are guided to place an emphasis on content, purpose, and audience, using this focus to guide their compositions. Imitation exercises, power writing, collaborative writing, and in-class responses are just some of the types of assignments students can expect throughout the course. In addition, students will read and write in a variety of prose styles to gain an understanding of the connections between interpretive skills in reading and in writing. Students should read the course/examination description from the College Board, which can be found at: http://apcentral.collegeboard.com Another useful reference is Nine tips for effective writing. |
